Screwface American Girl Tee Black

The Silence of the Lambs wide theatrical release was 30 years ago on Valentine's Day, 1991.

The soundtrack was a curation of cold post punk + dreamy new wave that perfectly represented the swan song of the eighties. One track that played in contrast to the rest was 'American Girl' by Tom Petty + The Heartbreakers.

Catherine (Brooke Smith) is introduced while singing along to the lyrics in her car, driving to her dorm room shortly before being abducted. Its upbeat tempo + karaoke style chorus are easy to misinterpret as light hearted pop. Many hypothesize Petty wrote the song as a reference to a Gainsvile urban legend about a female college student that jumped off her balcony to the freeway below after getting high.

The song was released in 1977 but didn't chart or become a commercial hit until years later partly due to its inclusion in The Silence of The Lambs. It's now widely regarded as one of Tom Petty's biggest hits.
